Scientists of Modern India

Reading Time: < 1 minute

With the presence of Aryabhatta, Charaka, Sushruta, Bhaskara and Varahamihira, the Gupta period marked the high-watermark of scientific achievements in ancient India. Over the next several hundred years, frequent military attacks from Central Asian nomadic tribes destroyed the great centers of learning at Nalanda and Takshashila. Gradually, as a society, Indians nearly forgot their inherent scientific temper.

It was several centuries later, with the advent of English education in the 19th century, that a new scientific spirit spread through the land – young men and women enthusiastically took up the pursuit of the natural sciences and traveled to Europe and US for further education. Many returned back and made a mark in a newly independent India.
